Parable of the Farmer Spreading Seed
Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23

Where is your Heart?

The Jist:

Examine the garden.  Feel free to get inside as you look around.

What do you see here?

Each one of these sections is a person’s life.

Open the seed bin.  If each section is a person’s life, what do you think the seeds are?  (The seeds are the words Jesus spoke recorded in the Bible (the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), His good news about being saved from our sins and being in His Kingdom forever.

Sprinkle a few seeds (found in the jar) on each life and think about what happens to the seeds here.

The Conversation:

What would happen to the seeds that are sprinkled here?  (helpful notes found below) What happened to the words of Jesus in this life? Have His words grown in this life?  If not, what is the problem? (Each section one by one)

Listen to what your kids say before adding anything but here are some notes from the passage to guide your conversation.

  1. The Path.  The birds steal the seeds. It’s like when we hear, don’t understand, and instead of asking questions we forget or let Satan steal the important message.

  2. The Rocky Ground.  The rocks remind us of when our roots don’t get planted.  We get excited about following Jesus but when hard times come, we stop following Jesus.

  3. Thorns and Weeds. The thorns and weeds choke out the good plants. Thorns and weeds are like the worries and love of money in this life that take our attention away from God if we’re not careful.

  4. Good Soil.  This is when we hear God’s words, understand and obey.  He leads our life and brings a beautiful garden that will keep following Jesus in hard times and good times.

What kind of soil have you been so far in your life?

What kind of soil do you want to be?

This might be a good time to pray.
